Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) director Clarito Barron stated few months ago that work plans for the exportation of bananas to the United States has already been agreed upon by both parties. This was postponed due to destruction caused by Typhoon Pablo to crops in Davao region and Compostela Valley including bananas.
After eight years of negotiations with the US regarding quarantine and sanitation issues, atlast the Philippine Embassy in the US announced that first batch of fresh Philippine bananas, a 7.047 metric tons of highland cavendish from Bukidnon has finally arrived in the United States last September 09, 2013. This is good news to our country for it will be a big help to boost country's economy especially farming sector. Filipinos are very grateful for making Philippines the first Asian country to export bananas to the United States.
Barron said after a meeting with Kelan Evans of the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the Philippines and the US are still discussing possible follow-up shipments of bananas including the possibility that we can also export mangoes coming from Davao Oriental and Samal Island other than Guimaras for he was informed by Evans that USDA- APHIS certified mango plantations in these areas are pest- free.
